5 Ways of Breastfeeding Sabotage!

breastfeeding sabotage

Many mummies, during their breastfeeding journey – despite best intentions have been unknowingly made certain decisions that sabotaged their breastfeeding experience.

Here are some possible ways that might be interfering with your breastfeeding experience! ???

1. Only allowing the baby to nurse for a limited time

Upon delivery, most mothers are often told to nurse every 3 hours. However, scheduling early on will interfere with the milk production. Babies actually require feeding more frequently than that! Longer nursing during the first few days of the baby’s delivery whilst colostrum is still present helps to reduce jaundice issues, and rid early meconium stools.

2. Having too many visitors

It is so important for mothers to spend time bonding and getting to know their baby! Skin to skin contact is highly encouraged, and your baby needs close contact as much as possible. Nurturing your baby from birth creates a trusting bond. The more skin to skin contact, the better! ❤️

3. Supplementing without expressing

Regardless of whether expressed milk, formula milk, or donor milk is used to replace a feed, the mother should continue expressing breast milk! Non-expression sends the signal to your body that it does not need breast milk, hence slowing production. If the mother wishes to continue breastfeeding her child, she is advised to continue the expression of breast milk.

4. Not getting professional help

Some mothers may think all will be fine as long as they power through. However, breastfeeding is not supposed to be difficult with the correct methods. Transitioning into motherhood can be extra daunting, including getting the hang of breastfeeding. It’s perfectly alright to seek help! With so many things on the plate, guidance from professionals and support from family members can greatly ease the journey. Mummies should not have to feel that they are on the journey alone! ?

5. Heeding the wrong advice

Many mothers may turn to forums to seek advice or get advice from people around them. However, they do not realise that each and every mother’s experience is different due to varying circumstances. As such, these advice may be futile as they are not applicable/tailored to your situation. Do ensure that you and your service provider truly understand your situation and your needs, and that the solution provided is catered to you.
